Deeds or Breeds?

I once saw a bumper sticker that said, “Deeds, not breeds.” Although I understand (and to some extent agree) with that slogan, I also firmly believe that you can have both deeds and breeds at the same time.

What I’m speaking of is the choice people have when they are deciding what kind of dog to get… a purebred dog or a mixed breed? The “deeds not breeds” bumper sticker strives to impart that it is better to adopt a dog from a shelter than to breed more dogs into the world.

Over the years, many people have expressed to me that they’d like to rescue a mixed breed dog or puppy, but they’re afraid to because they can’t research the breed and know what personality traits to expect.

The fact is, all dogs are canines, regardless of what breed or mix of breeds they are. While there may be some nuances that are breed-specific, working with your dog to become a properly socialized and obedience trained pet will result in a dog you can enjoy, regardless of their background.

Further, almost all dogs that are of a mixed breed will show some similarity to one breed or another. After all, how many dogs do you know that are Lab mixes, shepherd mixes, or terrier mixes? Each of these dogs are likely to display some of the traits that are particular to the breeds they are a mix of.

In fact, mixed breed dogs can often be a great choice especially for people who are worried about ending up with a dog that has a very strong drive to behave a certain way. The fact that they are only partly genetically geared that way usually results in a dog with more moderate instincts.

On the other hand, did you know that there are many breed-specific rescues? A quick search for “pug rescue Raleigh” (or whatever breed, whatever city is closest to you) is likely to reveal a plethora of options for rescuing a specific breed if you really have your heart set on a particular one.

Regardless of whether you decide on a mixed breed or purebred dog, you can still do a good deed by adopting a pet!
