Spending Time With Your Canine Valentine

Most people will agree that even if you have a “significant other,” Valentine’s Day is a time for showing all the important people in your life some love and appreciation, and our pets are no exception! (Yes, I did just indirectly refer to my pets as “people.” LOL!)

Often, humans tend to want to give to others what they’d want to receive themselves. However, dogs do not usually wish for jewelry, and chocolate is a definite no-no for dogs… it can cause very serious illness and even death!

So, what’s a human to do? There is one way dogs are similar to humans in their wants and needs… for love, attention and exercise. How about taking your dog for a nice long walk, giving him some extra ball-playing time or buying him a new dog toy and spending some time playing together?

Of course, if you really have your heart set on jewelry, a nice, fresh new dog tag might be a fun idea… be sure to put your phone number and/or e-mail address on there. Also, studies show that more dogs are reunited with their owners when the dog’s name is not on the tag… implying that people who find a dog are more likely to keep a pet whose name they know.

No matter how you celebrate Valentine’s Day, remembering your pet in some small way is another way for you to also be your dog’s best friend!
